Promised Land

The birds and the bees
We can leave up in the trees
We'll take a swim just you and me
Down beneath a gaggle
We can watch their feet paddle
I'm sure that's where I want to be
So take me down to that promised land
The nights are always cold
And our feet are in the sand
We'll drink some whiskey and hear the band
Play our favorite songs
As we all sing along
We'll swim down past the old courthouse
Where they said, "hey, it'll be okay. The TVA has a way to bring the power back someday."
The town that wouldn't drown
Dam, I like the way that sounds
So take me down to that promised land
The nights are always cold
And our feet are in the sand
We'll drink some whiskey and hear the band
Sing our favorite songs
As we all sing along
So take me down to that promised land
The nights are always cold
And our feet are in the sand
We'll drink some whiskey and hear the band
Play our favorite songs
As we all sing along

The Last Good Day

John was never one for to much talking
He always seemed more comfortable alone
He never had a taste for things too modern
He lived without a TV or a phone
The last good thing to happen to John Lewis
Happened on the twentieth of May
Since then it seemed he hardly knew us
But every now and then you'd hear him say,
"That was the last good day"
John would never tell us what had happened
He said he liked things better off this way
Most people never know how things are gonna go
He always seemed to think it was okay
To know he lived his last good day
He tried to keep his chin up
And keep his head held high
He'd smile and he'd wave
As the neighbors all walked by
But if you listened closely he would pray
"Oh Lord, don't let this be the last good day"
He tried to keep his Head up
And keep his chin held high
He'd smile and he'd wave
As the neighbors all walked by
But if you listened closely he would pray
"Oh Lord, don't let this be the last good day"

Gum Tree Canoe
04:38

On the Tombigbee river so bright I was born
In a hut made of husks of the tall yellow corn
It was there I first met with my Jula so true
And I row'd her about in my gum tree canoe
Singing row away row, o'er the waters so blue
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row, o'er the waters so blue
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
All day in the field of soft cotton I hoe
I think of my Jula and sing as I go
I'd catch her a bird with a wing of true blue
And at night sail her round in my gum tree canoe
Singing row away
Singing row away row, o'er the waters so blue
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row, o'er the waters so blue
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
With my hands on my banjo and toe on the oar
I would sing her a song to the rivers soft roar
While the bright stars shown down on my Jula so true
And they' danced in her eye in the gum tree canoe
Singing row away row, o'er the waters so blue
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row, o'er the waters so blue
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
One day the old river took us so far away
That we couldn't get back so we thought we'd just stay
We spied a tall ship with a flag of true blue
Ad she took us in tow in the gum tree canoe
Singing row away row, o'er the waters so blue
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row, o'er the waters so blue
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
Like a feather we'll float in our gum tree canoe
